This is the first Explorer that I have had a chance to review. Overall after looking over the watch for a couple days, this watch really grew on me. It is one of the only watches that Rolex produces in only stainless steel. There is no solid gold or two tone options for this watch.

After doing a touch of research on this watch, I found out that it was introduced in the 1970''s. It was marketed to cave explorers. Which I honestly never heard before. Also this watch really didn''t do so well and really never took off as the 1655 (aka Steve McQueen). The Explorer II and the Milgauss are the only Rolex watches that use hands that are unique only to one watch. All of the other models share similar hands. The orange / red 24 hour hand in the Explorer and the Lightning hand in the Milgauss.

Operation of the watch: The watch is pretty basic, The bezel is fixed 24hour. To set the watch, pull the crown out fully set your 24 hour hand and min time. Then place the crown at the first position out and independtly set the 12 hour hand. It should jump hour by hour and will not effect the min, sec, or 24 hour hands. Place the crown back down and screw down.

What I like: The vary strong, stainless steel 24 hour engraved bezel. The fact that it was designed for cave exploration. (cool factor). Classic oyster bracelet. Only available in stainless steel.

What I didn''t like: The fact that this particular watch does not have quick set date function.

What Should you Pay: This watch I think is really a bargin, You get more functionality that a submariner, water resistance up to 100 meters for less than a stainless steel submariner. You should be paying around $3000 for a 1989-1999. Box and papers ad $150-$200 if you care for them.
